There have been some issues with Last.fm the last couple of days. I can't get anyone's playlist to start, including mine. It either sits there and does nothing, or it gives a message saying there was a problem connecting. Even when it was working, it wasn't shuffling very well. Can anyone out there listen to my playlist right now?
Rich
UPDATE 9/30/07: The playlist issue seems to have been resolved. I had discovered that I couldn't listen to playlists when I was signed in to my Last.fm account, but could listen fine when I wasn't. It's working fine now though.
are you a self-taught guitar player? I'm just starting off and was wondering if you recommend my getting lessons or just learning on-line/from a book.
Thanks. Ray (rayhedrick.typepad.com)

I was self-taught at first, but I did take a guitar class in high school after I'd been teaching myself for a couple of years. Then later I went to the Bloom School of Jazz in Chicago, and GIT in Hollywood after that. I'd say I've learned at least as much on my own as I did in school. Beginner guitar lessons are good for learning the basics of music theory - learning about rhythm, reading music, etc. When I was teaching, however, I had the hardest time showing absolute beginners the basics of actually PLAYING a guitar - how to hold a pick, how to hold the neck, things like that. No one ever showed me how to do those things, and I think that's good. It's not a bad idea I guess to have someone take a look at your technique early on (just in case you're making it harder on yourself and you don't realize it), but your technique is your technique, and I feel it's something you should settle into on your own.
As far as whether YOU should take lessons or not, I can't say. You can certainly learn a lot online these days, and I would take advantage of the various lessons you find out there. A teacher will help you prioritize though. You may not know, looking at an online lesson, if it's something you're not ready for yet. A good teacher can tell you "here's what you need to learn first if you eventually want to learn this other stuff".
And when it comes to learning about improvising, I think having a great teacher is invaluable, at least when you first start diving into that area.

Thanks Mark. I discovered when I'm signed into my Last.fm account, I can't play any playlists. If I signout and try again, it works fine. Weird. I tried clearing out and re-accepting the cookies but the problem remains. Hopefully that means most people who visit this site will be able to listen to the playlist, but I'm not sure. Still investigating.
